VSCO girls or VSCO kids (/ˈvɪskoʊ/) are a youth subculture that emerged among teenagers around mid- to late-2019.[1] Named after the VSCO photography app, VSCO girls 'dress and act in a way that is nearly indistinguishable from one another',[2] using oversized T-shirts, Fjällräven Kankens, scrunchies, Hydro Flasks, Crocs, Pura Vida bracelets, instant cameras, Carmex, Metal straws, friendship bracelets, Birkenstocks, shell necklaces, and other beach-related fashion. Environmentalism, especially topics relating to sea turtle conservation, is also regarded as part of VSCO culture.[3][4][5]

VSCO girls often wear oversized T-shirts, sometimes long enough to cover their shorts. Though VSCO girls are primarily associated with wearing shorts, such as Nike track shorts, some also wear 'mom jeans' and include them as part of their style.[6][5]

Shoes popular with VSCO girls include Birkenstocks and Vans. They often decorate crocs with charms. Black and white checkered slip-on Vans are also popular.[7] The 'ugly shoe trend' popularized many of these styles.[8][9] Janet jackson design decade zip.

They adorn their wrists with scrunchies and Pura Vida bracelets or similar handmade friendship bracelets. Puka shell chokers are another popular accessory.[10]

Hydro Flask water bottles, often decorated with sea turtle conservation-themed stickers, are popular among VSCO girls. These bottles are often paired with reusable straws.[7]

VSCO girls use instant cameras and Fjällräven backpacks.[11][12]

Makeup and hair[edit]

Makeup and hair are often kept simple for a natural and light look. VSCO girl hairstyles have been described by many as low maintenance. Many VSCO girls often wear a messy bun with a scrunchie[6] or beach waves.[4] Common cosmetics include Burt's Bees and Carmexlip balm,[11][7]blush, such as Glossier Cloud Paint,[13] and skincare products, such as Mario Badescu's Facial Spray.[7]

VSCO girls are sometimes identified as an opposition to the heavy make-up and unnatural perfection commonly associated with Instagram.[13]

Brands[edit]

Among VSCO girls, use of the same brand-name products is a major component of the subculture. Popular brands include Pura Vida, Hydro Flask, Nike, Brandy Melville, Lululemon Athletica, Fjällräven, and Urban Outfitters.[10][11]

There is controversy about the high cost of products associated with VSCO girls, especially due to the emphasis on brand-name products. Fox Business estimates buying all of the products associated with the subculture would cost $229.89.[14] Some teenagers associate the look with private schools and wealth.[3][13]

Social media[edit]

VSCO subculture emerged on and was named after the photo editing app, and spread to TikTok (notably),[3] as well as Instagram and YouTube.[2] Many parodies of VSCO girls, often by the subculture itself, exist. Roisin Lanigan of I-D believes this points to empowerment rather than mocking.[10][6] As of August 2019, The New York Times found 'more than 422.4 million videos tagged #vscogirl on TikTok, most of them parodies'.[7] On August 30, 2019, TikTok added a VSCO girl filter, which included a water bottle decorated with stickers and a side ponytail with scrunchies.[15]

Environmental concern[edit]

There are differing opinions on VSCO girls' environmental concerns. While products like Birkenstocks, metal straws, and Hydro Flasks are associated with environmentalism,[16][5] some view VSCO girls as only caring about the environment when convenient, pointing to the popularity of the disposable cameras that inspired the popular filters on VSCO.[4][15]

VSCO (/ˈvɪskoʊ/), formerly known as VSCO Cam, is a photography mobile app for iOS and Android devices. The app was created by Joel Flory and Greg Lutze.[4][5][6] The VSCO app allows users to capture photos in the app and edit them, using preset filters and editing tools.[7][8][9]

Visual Supply Company was founded by Joel Flory and Greg Lutze in California in 2011.[6][10][7] VSCO was launched in 2012.[11] It raised $40 million from investors in May 2014.[12] In 2019, VSCO acquired Rylo, a video editing startup founded by the original developer of Instagram’s Hyperlapse.[13] Visual Supply Company has locations in Oakland, California, where it is headquartered, and Chicago, Illinois.[14][15] As of 2018, Visual Supply Company has $90 million in funding from investors and over 2 million paying members.[16] In December 2020 VSCO acquired AI-powered video editing app Trash.[17] Xcom 2 instant build.

Photos can be taken or imported from the camera roll, as well as short videos or animated GIFs (known in the app as DSCO; iOS only).[18] The user can edit their photos through various preset filters, or through the 'toolkit' feature which allows finer adjustments to fade, clarity, skin tone, tint, sharpness, saturation, contrast, temperature, exposure, and other properties.[19] Users have the option of posting their photos to their profile, where they can also add captions and hashtags. Photos can also be exported back into the camera roll or shared with other social networking services. The users also have an option to edit their own videos from their camera roll with the VSCO yearly membership, but they are not able to post camera roll videos to their account on VSCO.
