Bitlocker Recovery Key
It is always possible to forget the password you set while installing the BitLocker on your drive. In such a situation you should take out the Recovery Key file or the printed recovery key in front of you from where you have placed. With the Recovery Key you can easily unlock the encrypted drive and remove / change the BitLocker password. In this tutorial we’ll go through the steps of unlocking BitLocker encrypted drive using the recovery key.
Be careful with the key–someone that copies the key from your USB drive can use that copy to unlock your BitLocker-encrypted drive. To double-check whether the TPMAndStartupKey protector was added properly, you can run the following command: manage-bde -status (The “Numerical Password” key protector displayed here is your recovery key.). Assuming C: is the BitLocker protected drive you want to change recovery password for. Open an elevated cmd prompt (From the Start menu, right click on ‘Command Prompt’ and select ‘Run as administrator’). Enter the following command: manage-bde C: -protectors -get -type RecoveryPassword. Click All Devices, locate the device name that matches the computer with the encryption issue, and then click Show details. Click Manage, and then select Get BitLocker recovery keys to get the key. Your recovery key is the recovery key with a Device Name that matches the Recovery key ID on the recovery prompt. The recovery key is a unique 48-digit numerical password. If you forget your password, you can use your recovery key to access your drive. Or, Windows will require a BitLocker recovery key when it detects an insecure condition that may be an unauthorized attempt to access the data. Microsoft’s BitLocker encryption always forces you to create a recovery key when you set it up. You may have printed that recovery key, written it down, saved it to a file, or stored it online with a Microsoft account. If your BitLocker drive isn’t unlocking normally, the recovery key is your only option.
How to Unlock BitLocker Encrypted Drive Using the Recovery Key?
Insert the BitLocker encrypted drive in the Windows system, you will immediately be prompted to enter the BitLocker password.
If you forget your Windows BitLocker password, please click the “I forget my password” link just below the password input text area.
You will be asked for the BitLocker Recovery Key to unlock the drive.
The recovery key was created when BitLocker was first setup. The recovery key might have been saved or printed. Here is the recovery key I saved on my computer.

Copy your BitLocker Recovery Key and paste it into the input box below.
Once the Recovery Key has been accepted, you’ll be granted temporary access to your drive.
Click on Manage BitLocker link, this will provide you with a list of options that you can use to remove or change your BitLocker password.
A BitLocker recovery key is the only option to unlock your encrypted drive in case you forgot the BitLocker password. Without the recovery key you’ll permanently lost access to all the data on your encrypted drive.
